About Broxbourne Contact Charles

The Broxbourne Constituency lies in the south east corner of Hertfordshire. The constituency covers the whole of the Borough of Broxbourne plus the Northaw Ward of Welwyn Hatfield District.

Broxbourne is bounded to the east by the River Lea. To the south by the M25. It is divided by the A10 running from north to south.

The population is distributed mainly down the eastern side, in Hoddesdon, Broxbourne, Wormley, Cheshunt and Waltham Cross.

Cheshunt is a modern town with roots back to the Domesday Book. Cheshunt also boasts the headquarters of Tesco.

Hoddesdon is an attractive market town with a distinctive clock tower at the centre. In the eighteenth Century, Hoddesdon became a convenient stopping point for coaches on London-Cambridge route. In the last century the area became a centre for gravel extraction and the resulting gravel pits have left a network of lakes now used for leisure activities. Today the area is essentially a commuter area for London.

Waltham Cross at the southern end of the constituency has a busy pedestrianised shopping centre. The cross is one of 12 Eleanor Crosses erected between 1291 and 1294 to mark the overnight stops of the cortege of Queen Eleanor, wife of King Edward I.

In 2012, Broxbourne will host the canoeing at the London Olympics. A new canoe slalom course will be built using water from the River Lea.
